Like the ocean that connects distant islands, faraway shores, and families across generations, our story began long before we ever met.

Keeton Ma’ataua Mulitalo was born in Utah, with roots that reach across the Pacific. Her father was born in American Samoa before his journey carried him to Hawaii, San Francisco, and eventually Utah. Her mother, born and raised in Utah, brought her own traditions, strength, and love into their family. Keeton was raised with deep pride in her Polynesian heritage, shaped by the beauty of Samoan culture, the rhythm of dance, and the values of service, family, and faith.

From a young age, Keeton shared her culture through Polynesian dance, competing in regional and national competitions and carrying the spirit of the islands wherever she went. She also followed a path of service inspired by her father, a retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel who served through multiple combat deployments, including Desert Storm, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Keeton went on to make history as the first Polynesian to earn an Army commission from Utah State University, later becoming a Military Intelligence officer at Fort Huachuca, Arizona.

Bond Phittayasri was born in Maryland, the son of two hardworking parents who immigrated from Thailand to the United States in the late 1970s. His parents built their life through sacrifice, resilience, and love. His father, who later passed away from cancer, left behind a legacy of strength and perseverance. His mother was the heart of their home. An exceptional chef, she mastered not only Thai cuisine, but European cuisine as well. Food was her love language, and through every meal, every gathering, and every act of care, she taught Bond that love is something you give freely.

Her recent and unexpected passing from a brain aneurysm was a tragic loss for Bond and for so many others. She was his deepest connection to love, family, and the home she built with her own hands. Her loss was felt not only by Bond, but by hundreds within the Thai community whose lives she touched through selflessness, kindness, food, and love. Though her absence is deeply felt, her spirit remains woven into Bond’s life, his heart, and the way he loves others.

Bond grew up as an athlete, but soccer became his calling. His journey took him to the collegiate level, where he earned a full scholarship and was named conference Player of the Year. Later in life, Bond answered his own call to serve. He earned his Army commission through Maryland National Guard Officer Candidate School, an 18-month journey that tested his discipline, resilience, and commitment. Like Keeton, he continued his military career as a Military Intelligence officer at Fort Huachuca, Arizona.

That is where their paths first crossed.

At the time, it was strictly professional. Two officers, two separate journeys, both focused on training, service, and the missions ahead. There was no grand moment, no sudden wave crashing on the shore, just two people passing through the same chapter of life.

But like all great journeys, the ocean has a way of bringing people back together.

Years later, Keeton moved across the country to work for the State Department, and her path crossed Bond’s once again. Bond assisted her with transferring into the Maryland National Guard. Their interactions remained professional, but the current between them slowly began to shift.

As military training, exercises, and shared spaces continued to bring them together, they began to discover something deeper. Beyond the uniforms, beyond the briefings, and beyond the professional world they both knew, they found a shared love for travel, culture, food, family, and meaningful experiences.

Keeton carried with her the beauty, grace, and pride of Polynesian culture. Bond carried with him the warmth, flavor, and love he learned from his mother’s kitchen. Together, they found that their worlds were not so different after all. Both came from families who crossed oceans, built new lives, honored their heritage, and taught them the value of love through action.

Their love became a journey of two people from different shores, guided by service, culture, family, faith, and the people who shaped them. Like the tide, life brought them together in its own time. What began as a professional connection slowly became friendship, understanding, and eventually love.

As Keeton and Bond begin this next great voyage together, they carry with them the legacy of their families, the strength of their cultures, and the love of those who are with them in person and in spirit.

Their story is one of crossing oceans, honoring roots, embracing new horizons, and finding home in each other.
